ABOUT

Master Thatcher in Hampshire, Surrey, and West Sussex

Based in Hampshire we provide thatching repair, replacement and maintenance across the south including Surrey, and West Sussex

Welcome!

I am Ed Goodall, Master Thatcher based in Hampshire, with 33 years extensive experience and knowledge of different thatching types and applications.

Working with wheat reed, water reed and long straw around the UK and abroad, I have been fortunate to have worked and learnt with some of the best in Thatching.

Today I have my own team of dedicated, highly skilled craftsmen covering Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex. Whether it is an extension, a new build, repair or replacement of an existing thatched roof, we will provide you with a service that is second to none, with a top-class finish. No job too big or too small.

While we still enjoy working upon some of the most beautiful archetypal English country cottages, it is a pleasure to bring all the qualities of thatching to the modern age. In these days where the need to find sustainable solutions is ever increasing, we continue to develop our skills and knowledge to be part of bringing methods of thatching to new builds that provide an ecologically sound, superb natural finish with highly insulating properties.

For a free survey and quotation or any other enquiries, please contact me here. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you.

My Journey to Finding My Passion...

On a cold winters day in 1989 in Hampshire, while attempting some landscape gardening which I didn’t really enjoy, I looked up to the thatched roof of the owner’s property and realised I wanted to tend the grass up there, not down here!  I got home, looked up the nearest thatcher in the good old yellow pages and gained an instant apprenticeship with the Cleeves; a family of five generations of accumulated thatching skills.  It was the best start I could wish for!

As I moved west during the next 20 years, to the New Forest, Dorset and on to Cornwall, I met and worked for a number of different Thatchers, each having their own style and method – some really diverse and many who were and are really superb craftsmen.

Then, still heading west it seemed, I ran out of country (!) and found myself working much further afield in East Virginia Thatching part of a brand new theme park.  Ok, perhaps I didn’t truly find myself! But, being on a stage (it was literally like being on a stage) that could not be much further from thatching the archetypal cottage in our beautiful English countryside, it sowed a seed of expanding my views and skills in the use and benefits of thatch.

I continued to gain more experience back in the UK with new builds including a magnificent timber oak framed construction in Sussex, whilst still enjoying looking after more traditional thatched properties.  With good liaison between architect and thatcher to ensure design compatibility, some really special things can happen!

Having come full circle to my thatching roots again based in Hampshire, I have attracted a team of excellent craftsmen with a combined 80-year experience.  We enjoy working together, not least because we respect each other’s skill, consistency and the pride we all have in finding the best solutions to create the best finish; for durability and longevity, insulation efficiency and of course the beautiful aesthetics.

While I consult and enjoy helping others progress in mastering this ancient craft, I am inspired to develop upon and use my 33 years knowledge and experience to bring thatching to its full advantage to cater for the needs of the world we live in right now.
